Australian aged‑care bed expansion

In July 2026 the Australian federal government continued its national push to add roughly 10,000 residential aged‑care places each year. On 22 July it announced a $34.5 million Commonwealth contribution under the Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP) to fund 268 additional beds at five South Australian sites, targeting older Australians with complex and dementia‑related care needs and aiming to relieve hospital waiting lists.

A week later, on 29 July, ACCAP allocated a further $25.9 million to create 73 aged‑care beds across six Illawarra locations. The funding accompanies a $298 million joint‑venture development by the University of Wollongong and Keyton that will deliver about 500 senior places, including a 180‑bed residential facility, independent‑living towers and supporting health and wellness amenities. Both announcements underscore the government’s effort to address “hot‑spot” regional shortages and to expand capacity for complex care across the country.
