Australian employment data shows a trend toward part-time and multiple jobholding. Analysis of government data indicates that the proportion of Australians holding at least two jobs reached a record high of 6.9 per cent, representing approximately 1,049,100 people. This growth is particularly notable among established workers and is increasingly seen in both regional and city areas. As of June 2026, the number of multiple job-holders reached 1 million, marking the highest rate recorded by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in approximately 25 years. This trend is especially prominent among women (7.7 per cent) and younger workers, with 11.2 per cent of those aged 20 to 24 holding more than one job. The hospitality sector has emerged as a primary source for supplemental income through casual and weekend roles. In the June quarter, the accommodation and food services sector held approximately 1.35 million jobs, including roughly 126,000 secondary roles. Recent labor market figures for August show that while employment rose by 39.5k—exceeding expectations—the unemployment rate increased from 4.5% to 4.6%. This growth was driven primarily by part-time positions, which increased by 46k, while full-time employment decreased by 6k. While the ANZ-Indeed Australian job ads index reported a 2.2 per cent rise in listings for September, economists suggest this may lag behind broader economic cooling, noting a recent fall of 3,000 vacancies.
