A survey of Victorian local government councils released in early August 2026 found that most councils lack formal AI strategies or governance frameworks despite growing use of AI for services and decision‑making. Respondents highlighted risks such as privacy, bias and accountability, and called for central guidance, training and stronger procurement oversight.

A few days later, Australian public‑service leaders, together with European Union partners, outlined the AI for Regional Governance (AIRG) framework. The proposal seeks a unified, values‑based vision for AI integration across public administration, emphasizing strategic imagination and coordinated governance structures to ensure AI delivers public value. The shift moves the discussion from identifying local‑level gaps to developing a national‑level, internationally‑aligned governance model.
