The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has committed to maintaining all its regional bank branches until at least December 2030, extending a previous moratorium that was set to end in mid-2027. This decision follows community concerns and a Senate inquiry regarding the loss of face-to-face banking services in rural areas. In response to the decline in regional banking, the Australian Banking Association (ABA) has proposed a trial of multi-bank hubs to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. This model would allow banks to share the costs of physical infrastructure in rural areas to preserve in-person services. The ABA noted that approximately 850 branches closed across rural Australia between 2017 and 2025, leaving an estimated 600 towns without a branch. While the regional moratorium is in place, the CBA noted that certain locations, such as the Albion Park branch, are exempt from the commitment because they are classified as metropolitan under the Accessibility/Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA+) framework. The Albion Park branch is scheduled to close on November 6. To support its network, CBA has announced plans to invest A$140 million in FY2027 to upgrade its national branch network. This investment is intended to enhance access to specialist support and improve the responsiveness and personalization of services. CBA currently operates over 600 locations, including 281 regional branches, and intends to continue using mobile ATMs in areas impacted by natural disasters.
