Australian tax return lodgement deadlines
Overview
As the tax season approaches, approximately two million Australians have yet to lodge their returns. Due to the traditional October 31 deadline falling on a Saturday, self-lodgers have until 11:59 pm on Monday, November 2, to submit paperwork.
Failure to meet this deadline carries significant financial risks. Individuals face an initial fine of $364, which increases by $364 every 28 days up to a maximum of $1,820. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) may also apply a daily compounded interest charge of 11.51 per cent on outstanding amounts. Furthermore, penalties for underpaying or reckless filing can range from 25 per cent to 75 per cent of the shortfall.
Experts caution that rushing the process to avoid penalties can lead to costly errors, such as incorrect claims or missed deductions. While the ATO provides pre-filled information from employers and banks, taxpayers are responsible for accuracy. Additionally, the ATO has already blocked over 10,000 tax returns involving $170 million in deductions linked to suspected unregistered agents.
