Overview

In early July 2026 the Austrian government approved the Fernpass tunnel project in Tirol, outlining a €14 toll per trip for the new road link. The decision was part of a broader “Fernpass package” that also included a weight limit for vehicles.

By the end of the month, local opposition had materialised in large‑scale protests. On 31 July, around 950‑1,000 demonstrators blocked the Fernpass road (B 179) for several hours, chanting against the tunnel and the proposed toll. Green Party leaders joined the protests, condemning the scheme as a “Judas reward” and urging the state to pause the project while seeking safer traffic solutions. The demonstrations highlighted community concerns over increased traffic, noise, emissions and the financial burden of the toll.
