Austria residency rule changes for Ukrainian men
Overview
Austria has updated its protection rules for Ukrainian men subject to military service. Under new regulations approved by the Austrian Council of Ministers, new arrivals will no longer receive simplified protection status based solely on their nationality and arrival from Ukraine.
To qualify for residency, applicants must now demonstrate that they have fulfilled their obligations to the Ukrainian military service system or have been officially exempted. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stated the measure serves both Austria and Ukraine. These changes apply to applications submitted since the beginning of August and are not retroactive; those who already hold protection status remain unaffected.
