Austrian Airlines has announced the discontinuation of several direct flight services scheduled for early 2027. On January 11, 2027, the airline will end its direct connection between Cologne/Bonn Airport and Vienna. To maintain this route, Eurowings, a fellow Lufthansa Group member, will take over the service starting January 14, 2027, with plans to operate between 12 and 26 weekly connections. Passengers with existing bookings from mid-January onwards will be rebooked onto alternative flights. Additionally, the airline will end its service between Vienna and Zagreb on January 10, 2027, marking the conclusion of over 40 years of operations on that route. This service was only previously interrupted by war and the COVID-19 pandemic. While the carrier will continue seasonal summer flights to Croatian coastal cities such as Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik, it will not reinstate the Zagreb connection for the 2027 summer season. The loss of this connection is noted as significant because it provided travelers access to the airline’s global hub in Vienna for international and transoceanic travel. While Austrian Airlines has steadily reduced its presence in Zagreb, Croatia Airlines is expanding its operations there, planning to maintain two daily flights through the upcoming winter season. The withdrawal coincides with a reported 3.3 percent decrease in passenger traffic at Zagreb Airport in September 2026 compared to the previous year.
