Overview

Observations from 2006‑2017 showed Austrian glaciers in the Ötztal and Stubai ranges losing roughly one‑fifth of their area and nearly a quarter of their volume, with five glaciers disappearing entirely. Model projections indicate that even under a 1.5 °C warming scenario, only about 2.7 % of 2017 glacier volume would remain by 2100, while a 2 °C rise would leave less than 1 %. Current trajectories (+2.7 °C) could cause near‑complete deglaciation before 2075, and over a third of regional glaciers might vanish by 2030.

By mid‑2026, the accelerated melt had reshaped the Alpine landscape. Steeper, unstable ice fields in the Ankogelgruppe increased rock‑fall risk, prompting rescues of hikers on hazardous glacier routes. At the same time, warming allowed ticks, gall‑forming insects and the invasive Japanese bush mosquito to colonise alpine meadows up to 2,000 m, raising concerns about Lyme disease transmission to wildlife such as marmots and to visitors. Authorities advised hikers to use protective clothing and repellents.

Together, the data illustrate a trajectory from rapid glacier shrinkage to heightened physical dangers and new ecological threats in the Austrian Alps.
