New television crime series productions are underway in Austria and Germany. Filming has commenced for the second season of the ‘Kommissar Rex’ reboot in Vienna, a co-production between ORF and Sat.1 featuring Maximilian Brückner and Hilde Dalik. Following the success of its first season on Sat.1, the ‘Kommissar Rex’ reboot has been renewed for a second season, which is scheduled to air in early 2027 on Sat.1 and via the Joyn streaming service. The upcoming season will consist of six feature-length episodes. Filming is currently taking place at various Vienna locations, including the Prater, the Albertina, Hotel Sacher, and the State Opera. Maximilian Brückner will return as Max Steiner alongside the German Shepherd, Rex. The cast includes Felix Seebacher as Inspector Felix Burger, Alfred Dorfer as Dr. Tom Wippler, and Doris Golpashin as Evelyn Leitner, with new additions Hilde Dalik as Paula Grobecker and Sophia Borchhardt as Anna. This new chapter, titled ‘Rex: Vienna Calling’, follows the German Shepherd as he partners with Steiner to solve complex cases, such as bomb plots and suspicious deaths. The production consists of six 90-minute episodes that function as standalone films. Beyond the investigations, the series explores Steiner’s personal life following the unexpected return of his adult daughter, Anna. Additionally, the ORF series ‘Tiroler Blut’ is scheduled to premiere on October 5, 2026. Set in Innsbruck, the show stars Ursula Strauss as Chief Inspector Fanny Gruber. The series follows a three-generation police family, focusing on the personal and professional tensions inherent in a rural environment where the characters are personally acquainted with those involved in the investigations.
