Regarding taxation, the Austrian Ministry of Finance allows for the offsetting of Bitcoin losses against capital gains from other assets, such as stocks, within private assets. This offset is not automatic and requires reporting through income tax assessments. Both cryptocurrency gains and stock sale gains are generally subject to a 27.5 percent tax rate.

Additionally, individuals moving away from Austria must navigate exit taxation rules. If a taxpayer loses Austrian tax residency, a fictitious sale of Bitcoin is calculated based on the market value at the time of departure. This ensures that value increases accumulated while resident in Austria are subject to the 27.5 percent tax rate.
