The Austrian federal government has reached an agreement on a 16 billion euro university budget for the period 2028 to 2030. This funding level is lower than the 18 billion euros requested by the Universities Conference (uniko). Academic leaders, including the Rectors of the Universities of Vienna, Graz, and Klagenfurt, have expressed concerns that the allocation could lead to a “massive dismantling of the higher education system,” harm research, and result in staff losses. Alongside education funding, the government approved the ‘Zukunftsdepot’ (Future Depot) initiative, a state-backed savings model scheduled to launch on July 1, 2027. The program aims to encourage long-term wealth building for youth through market investments. Children born from January 1, 2027, onwards may be eligible for a one-time 500 euro state start bonus. The plan allows for annual tax-free investments of up to 5,000 euros per child, with capital gains tax exemptions remaining in place until the beneficiary reaches age 18. Regarding the ‘Zukunftsdepot’, the funds will be held in a special account in the child’s name rather than being paid directly to parents. Business leaders, including Barbara Thaler of the Economic Chamber Tyrol, have expressed support for the initiative. Thaler noted that the program could assist the country’s transition from traditional savings accounts toward more diverse investment strategies and improve financial literacy among the youth.
