Austria is observing its National Day, commemorating the departure of the last occupation troops. The celebrations include military displays and initiatives to promote democratic values. In Vienna, the Austrian Armed Forces are scheduled to hold a major presentation at Heldenplatz, featuring a performance showcase and an induction ceremony for approximately 1,200 recruits. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner noted that while neutrality is central to Austria’s identity, the military remains essential for defending peace and security. Alongside these military events, the Bündnis 2025 alliance is conducting its second Democracy Week to promote the rule of law and media independence. At Heldenplatz, the Bundesheer is showcasing new military hardware, including Leopard and Ulan tanks and the Skyranger air defense system. The program includes interactive displays such as a drone course and a cyber-escape room. Simultaneously, a security festival at Rathausplatz is highlighting the 340th anniversary of the Vienna Professional Fire Department. This event features demonstrations by the WEGA police tactical unit, police service dogs, and emergency medical helicopters, with over 40 organizations participating to showcase expertise in safety, health, and social services. In Innsbruck, festivities include an airport festival with aircraft and helicopter exhibitions, such as Eurofighters and Black Hawk helicopters. The region is also hosting an open house at the Landhaus to provide public insight into regional administration, following a ‘Großer Zapfenstreich’ ceremony centered on the importance of defending democracy. During the celebrations, President Alexander Van der Bellen delivered a televised address calling for national unity and social cohesion. Reflecting on the atrocities of National Socialism and the Holocaust, he warned that “political division leads to an abyss” and emphasized that the success of the Second Republic relies on the ability to respect diversity and find compromises.
