Austrian parliamentary inquiry into Pilnacek death

An Austrian parliamentary inquiry committee is investigating the death of former justice section head Christian Pilnacek, whose body was found in the Danube in October 2023. The investigation has transitioned into a political inquiry focusing on potential interference within the judiciary.

Former Justice Minister Alma Zadić testified regarding the restructuring of the criminal law section and the suspension of Pilnacek. While Zadić stated she had no personal perception of attempted political influence, she referenced the ‘Kreutner Report,’ which suggested such interference did occur.

In a significant development, current Justice Minister Anna Sporrer was summoned to testify, marking the first time a sitting member of the federal government has been called as a witness. The inquiry is examining the transfer of investigations between prosecutor offices and the role of political figures. Additionally, the committee is looking into whether former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz had an interest in ensuring Pilnacek remained in his position.
