Austria's mid-size firms crisis

Overview

A Creditreform analysis released in July 2026 highlighted a looming succession problem for Austria's medium‑size companies, noting that nearly half will need a succession plan by 2030. The study warned that 51,000 employers and around 700,000 jobs could be at risk, with many owners expecting external sales or buyouts while internal family transfers decline. In response, the Freedom Party (FW) has urged the federal government to make succession a strategic priority through tax incentives, reduced bureaucracy, and nationwide information campaigns to prevent closures or foreign sales.

A week later, EY‑Parthenon surveyed restructuring experts and found that 47% of respondents anticipate the peak of a corporate restructuring wave in the second half of 2026, with another 21% expecting the peak in early 2027. Rising energy and material costs, weaker demand, geopolitical uncertainty, and tighter financing are driving pressure across automotive, trade, real estate, manufacturing, and construction. Experts noted the automotive supply chain is especially strained.

By August 2026, while corporate insolvencies in the first half of the year saw a minor 1.6% decline compared to 2025, levels remain historically high. The transport and communication sector has reported the highest insolvency rate, followed by construction and the credit and insurance industries. Analysts suggest the economy remains in a consolidation phase as companies continue to struggle with high energy and personnel costs.
