Technical evaluations by ADAC and ÖAMTC have identified reliability gaps in automotive Child-Presence-Detection (CPD) systems. These systems are designed to prevent fatalities caused by children or animals being left in overheating vehicles, a risk exacerbated by rapid temperature rises in summer heatwaves. The analysis distinguishes between two technological approaches. Indirect systems, such as the one used in the Mercedes-Benz CLA, monitor variables like seatbelt buckles and door openings. While these systems issue warnings, they cannot definitively confirm a child’s presence and lack external acoustic or visual signals. Direct detection systems, utilized by BMW, BYD, and Zeekr, employ radar, ultrasound, or cameras to monitor vital signs like breathing. However, testing revealed a critical failure: none of the models reliably detected a newborn in a rear-facing ISOFIX baby seat, even when using breathing-mimicking dummies. Experts emphasize that while these technologies provide a safety net, they should not replace caregiver vigilance. Further technical analysis highlights the extreme danger of vehicle heat, noting that interiors can exceed 60 degrees Celsius within 90 minutes under direct sunlight. This creates lethal conditions for children, who regulate body temperature less efficiently than adults. Beyond child safety, experts warn that high temperatures can compromise medications like insulin, damage cosmetics, and cause pressurized aerosols or lithium-ion batteries to pose safety risks.
