Automakers are increasingly focusing on electrification and specialized vehicle segments. Range Rover announced plans to develop its first electric fastback-style Grand Tourer (GT) using a next-generation Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, with production targeted for early 2027. This transition includes a new model delivering 542 horsepower and a 535 km range. Hyundai has reported advancements in battery technology, including high-performance cells for Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREV) and mid-nickel NCM batteries for mass-market models. These developments have led to the introduction of the Ioniq 9 Performance, a fully electric SUV featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, 430 horsepower, and a 620 kWh battery capable of a 10% to 80% charge in 24 minutes. To address concerns regarding range and charging infrastructure, several manufacturers—including Hyundai, Genesis, Ram, Jeep, Ford, and Scout Motors—have announced plans to produce EREVs by the end of 2028. These vehicles use a gasoline engine solely as a generator to provide additional mileage beyond the initial 120 to 150 miles of electric-only driving. Industry experts suggest EREVs serve as a “stepping stone powertrain,” particularly for large vehicles like trucks and SUVs. Specific product timelines for EREVs include Ram’s intention to launch the ‘1500 Ramcharger’ truck in the first half of 2027, which is expected to boast a total range of up to 690 miles. While the technology aims to bridge the gap between internal combustion engines and fully electric vehicles, manufacturers face challenges regarding high consumer price points and the complexity of explaining the system to drivers. Other manufacturers are adjusting their lineups through model revivals and engine updates. Mitsubishi is reviving the Pajero on a Triton chassis, featuring a 2.4-liter turbo diesel engine, with expected launches in Thailand, Japan, and Australia by March 2027. Additionally, Mazda is updating its MX-5 with a 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine.
