Autonomous driving technology development in Japan

Automotive and technology companies in Japan are advancing various levels of autonomous driving capabilities through specialized AI and sensor integration.

Toyota Motor Corporation is working toward Level 2++ autonomous driving features, targeting a 2028 market introduction. Their approach utilizes the Arene software platform and an end-to-end (E2E) AI system paired with a rule-based “guardrail” mechanism to ensure safety and explainability. Simultaneously, the startup Turing is pursuing Level 5 full autonomy using a camera-centric approach. By utilizing high-performance onboard computing and a limited number of cameras, Turing has conducted successful test runs in cities like Tokyo and Osaka.

In the logistics sector, T2 has demonstrated Level 2 autonomous truck technology capable of navigating public roads to connect highway interchanges. These trials involved routing vehicles between specific hubs and interchanges using high-precision trajectory design and sensor detection for pedestrians and cyclists. T2 aims to reach Level 4 autonomy and plans to begin commercial operations of these technologies in January 2027.
