Racing and Independiente draw 1-1 in Avellaneda derby

Overview

The Clásico de Avellaneda between Racing Club and Independiente, held at the Presidente Perón Stadium, ended in a 1-1 draw during the 13th round of the Torneo Clausura. Matías Zaracho opened the scoring for Racing in the 28th minute after a scramble in the box involving Adrián ‘Maravilla’ Martínez and goalkeeper Rodrigo Rey. Independiente equalized in the second half when Maximiliano Meza converted a penalty in the 65th minute following a foul by Gonzalo Escudero.

The match was characterized by high tension, disciplinary incidents including red cards for Ribair Rodriguez and Luciano Aued, and several controversial refereeing decisions by Facundo Tello. Following the final whistle, Racing supporters directed chants and insults toward both the players and club president Diego Milito, highlighting the club’s ongoing institutional and sporting crisis. Fans expressed significant dissatisfaction, criticizing the team's overall performance.

Following the result, Independiente coach Jadson Viera expressed frustration with the draw despite praising his team’s ability to improve after a poor first half. Viera noted that the team was “superior with the ball in the second half” and created several scoring opportunities, though he expressed bitterness regarding how the match concluded.

In separate reserve action, Independiente’s reserve team defeated Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto 2-1 in Córdoba during the Torneo Proyección Clausura. After conceding an early second-half goal, Independiente responded via Mathias De Las Carreras, with Simón Bodnar scoring the winning goal in the 36th minute of the second half.
