Two separate aircraft incidents involving tire blowouts occurred at Chicago O’Hare International Airport within a two-week period in August 2026. On August 14, a United Airlines Boeing 737-900 aborted its takeoff roll to Phoenix after two tires on the right main gear blew. All 161 passengers and six crew members deplaned without injury. The FAA launched an investigation into the mechanical failure. On August 17, a second series of incidents occurred. American Airlines Flight 386, a Boeing 737-800 arriving from New York, experienced a tire blowout during landing. Emergency responders met the aircraft, and while passengers were transported to the terminal via bus, no injuries were reported. Hours later on the same day, United Airlines Flight 739, an Airbus A320 arriving from Omaha, Nebraska, also suffered tire damage while exiting the runway. Passengers from this flight were evacuated using airstairs and buses. The FAA is investigating these occurrences, noting they follow a similar pattern to the United Airlines takeoff abort earlier in the month. Aviation officials are currently investigating whether weather or other factors contributed to these occurrences, which took place on different runways.
