AWS approval for NATO restricted data

Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has become the first commercial cloud provider to receive approval from all 32 NATO member nations to handle ‘NATO RESTRICTED’ information. This classification is the Alliance’s lowest level of secrecy.

To achieve this, AWS demonstrated compliance with ‘D32’, a NATO technical guideline for processing restricted information on public clouds. The authorization followed an evaluation of AWS’s capabilities by Spain’s National Cryptologic Center (CCN), with the results subsequently approved by NATO.

The agreement allows NATO, its defense partners, and member nations to use AWS services within regions located in member countries to manage restricted workloads. This pre-assessed security baseline is intended to reduce the time, effort, and cost for individual allies to meet security and compliance obligations through their national accreditation processes.
