Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched the ‘Built Together’ program, a commitment to invest more than $1 billion into U.S. communities hosting its data centers over the next five years. The initiative is designed to address local environmental and economic concerns related to the infrastructure required for artificial intelligence. The investment focuses on education, workforce development, energy affordability, and water conservation. Specific goals include providing free community college tuition for approximately 300,000 students, expanding modular training centers to 25 sites by 2028, and offering energy efficiency grants for 30,000 residences and 300 public buildings. AWS also pledged to become ‘water positive’ by 2030. AWS CEO Matt Garman described the expansion of data center infrastructure as a national security necessity, comparing it to the development of the interstate highway system. To improve transparency, the company stated it will no longer use nondisclosure agreements with government agencies regarding its projects and will publish annual reports on energy and water consumption. Garman noted that over 100 data center moratoriums are currently being considered across the United States. He further disputed claims that data centers significantly drive up local electricity costs or deplete water supplies, characterizing some of these concerns as ‘misinformation’.
