In late July 2026, the governor of Turkey’s Aydın province issued a decree tightening controls on fig production to protect the region’s key export. The order bans early‑ripening chemicals such as Ethephon, requires storage facilities to obtain registration certificates, and mandates a Plant Health Control Certificate for all shipments. Inspection duties were expanded to producers, traders, municipalities and police, with electronic monitoring of warehouses and administrative fines for violations. Governor Osman Varol presented the decree to industry representatives and officials, noting that the measures aim to reduce mycotoxin risk and improve post‑harvest storage conditions. He emphasized that the goal is to raise awareness rather than punish, supporting the livelihoods of local farmers by maintaining the Aydın fig's reputation. To facilitate compliance, local authorities have launched several training initiatives. In initiatives in the Efeler district, 156 growers attended sessions covering the provincial decree, pollinating fig (ilek) use, and the Plant Protection Products (BKÜ) Practitioner Certificate process. Following this, officials in the Nazilli district held briefings in the Kestel and Yalınkuyu neighborhoods. These sessions, led by District Director of Agriculture and Forestry Hülya Sungur, focused on healthy production, harvesting, and drying methods. A primary emphasis was placed districts, focusing on food safety, specifically safety and preventing the formation of aflatoxin and ochratoxin in dried figs, while detailing formation. In response to contamination risks, the Commodity Exchange has offered a 50% discount on laboratory and cold storage services, while industry representatives continue to demand increased government inspections to prevent fraudulent labeling.
