During the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev reported that military operations were proceeding according to plan to restore territorial integrity. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense confirmed the liberation of several settlements, including Jabrayil, and the destruction of Armenian military equipment and ammunition depots. During this period, Azerbaijan received diplomatic support from Turkey, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressing backing for the liberation of occupied territories. Following the military operations, which included the ‘Iron Fist’ tactic, the liberation of Zangilan was highlighted as a significant historical milestone. Azerbaijan’s diplomatic landscape during the conflict involved consistent support from Pakistan. While the strategic alliance with Turkey remained highly valued, some discourse in Turkey regarding the necessity of Turkish involvement in the victory raised questions concerning mutual respect between the two nations. As the 44-day second Karabakh war progressed, President Aliyev conducted media interviews with Russia’s Pervıy Kanal and Turkey’s TRT Haber, maintaining that military movements were proceeding according to plan. The Azerbaijani Parliament officially renamed the liberated village of Madagiz to Suqovuşan. In an interview with Le Figaro, Aliyev characterized the military action as a response to Armenian provocations and an attempt to seize control of strategic energy infrastructure, such as the Trans Adriatic Pipeline and the Southern Gas Corridor. Azerbaijani forces continued their counter-offensive, reporting the liberation of various villages and parts of the Zangilan, Jabrayil, Gubadli, and Kalbajar districts. Military reports noted the use of high-precision weapons to strike Armenian positions in Khojavand, Gubadly, and Lachin, while Armenian forces reportedly fired upon Aghdam, Tartar, and Aghjabadi. In the aftermath of the conflict, Azerbaijan has commemorated the liberation of Qubadli city, which was reclaimed on October 25, 2020. The city's liberation is viewed as a strategic milestone that aided subsequent operations toward Lachin.
