Azerbaijan Shamakhi climate diplomacy platform

In late July 2026 Azerbaijan hosted the third Shamakhi (Shamakhy) climate meeting, co‑organized with Turkey and Australia. Over 70 UNFCCC officials and delegates from 34 countries attended, including ministers, heads of state envoys and future COP chairs. The agenda covered climate finance, a just transition, adaptation, mitigation and how the discussions could inform decisions at the upcoming COP31.

The meeting is positioned as an informal bridge between the Bonn summer sessions and the pre‑COP period, providing a trust‑building forum where participants can discuss unresolved issues more freely. Delegations from a wide range of nations—including Fiji, Tuvalu, Ethiopia, Ireland, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Sweden, China, Russia, Egypt, Pakistan, Kenya and Nigeria—took part, underscoring the platform’s role in advancing broader UNFCCC negotiations and strengthening climate diplomacy ahead of COP31.
