Azerbaijan and Türkiye are deepening their strategic energy partnership, transitioning from a focus on traditional oil and natural gas toward an electricity-centric model. During the 5th Azerbaijan-Türkiye Energy Forum in Baku, ministers signed protocols to integrate electricity systems, enhance energy security, and expand cooperation into renewable energy, mining, petrochemicals, and energy efficiency. At the forum, Türkiye’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced three major electricity projects designed to foster regional integration. These include a connection via Nakhchivan to Türkiye, a green energy corridor spanning Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye, and Bulgaria, and an undersea electricity transmission line through the Black Sea to Europe. Bayraktar described the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Türkiye-Bulgaria project as the ‘TANAP of electricity’ because of its potential to connect the wider Turkic world. The regional green energy corridor is expected to be formalized during the COP31 climate conference in Antalya this November. Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Perviz Shahbazov noted that the partnership has already achieved significant success in gas delivery, with 130 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas sent to Türkiye to date. This bilateral cooperation is being complemented by Azerbaijan’s broader efforts to integrate into global trade routes. The State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ) has joined the China-ASEAN Joint Investment Council to facilitate capital movement along the Middle Corridor. Simultaneously, energy companies SOCAR and Türkiye’s TPAO are discussing new exploration initiatives and maximizing the capacity of existing infrastructure, such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and TANAP.
