The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain has maintained an intensive schedule of Bhasma and ash aartis through July and August 2026. Early-morning ceremonies on July 6, 8, 10, 12-13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and August 3 attracted crowds ranging from thousands to over half a million, with the August 3 Sawan Monday aarti drawing more than 500,000 devotees and a royal procession of the Chandramauleshwar form. On 7 August 2026, the temple held a Bhasma aarti at Brahma-muhurta featuring a Panchamrit abhishek and ash adornment. On 9 August 2026, the temple observed the second Sawan Monday, marked by the rare occurrence of Som Pradosh and Budhaditya Yoga. Due to Som Pradosh, the deity observed a fast, necessitating a special ‘falahar’ (fruit-based) offering. On 12 August 2026, rituals for Hariyali Amavasya saw the deity adorned with green hemp and Belpatra leaves. On 16 August 2026, during the third Monday of Sawan, the deity wore a silver Sheshnag crown and Rudraksha malas. On 20 August 2026, Olympian shooter Manu Bhaker attended the Bhasma Aarti. On 22 August 2026, the deity was adorned with bhang, a silver crown, and a mund mala. On 26 August 2026, during the Shravan month, the deity was adorned in the form of Lord Ganesha using bhang and sandalwood. This ceremony included a traditional panchamrit abhisheka and Bhasma Aarti performed by the Mahanirvani Akhara. Additionally, the temple celebrated Raksha Bandhan with a special ritual where priest families tied a handcrafted, two-foot-long silk Rakhi to Lord Mahakal. This festival also featured a ‘Mahabhog’ offering consisting of 125,000 laddoos made from gram flour and pure ghee. Although a lunar eclipse occurred that day, it was not visible in India, leaving religious observances unaffected.
