In mid‑July 2026 Babbel announced that the Māori term kaitiakitanga – meaning guardianship of the environment for future generations – had been selected as the world’s most beautiful word. The decision came from an international jury of linguists, authors and cultural experts who evaluated 223 submissions in more than 75 languages.

Babbel highlighted the relevance of kaitiakitanga to climate concerns and noted that many minority and endangered languages contain concepts without direct equivalents, underscoring the diversity of linguistic heritage worldwide.
