Brazil expands bridges, rail, and urban infrastructure

From May through September 2026, Brazil’s federal, state, and municipal authorities accelerated a wave of road, bridge, rail, and utility projects. In Bahia, the Salvador-Itaparica megabridge project reached a milestone as officials held a workshop in Maragogipe to detail progress. Approximately 10% of construction mobilization is complete, with the central span remaining the critical focus. In Maranhão, the Ministry of Transport and DNIT finalized an emergency R$176.7 million contract to reconstruct the left side of the Estreito dos Mosquitos Bridge on the BR-135, with work scheduled to begin on September 10, 2026, following inspections that identified concrete displacement and corrosion. In Rio Grande do Sul, the federal government released R$26 million to accelerate the Guaíba Bridge complex in Porto Alegre, targeting access ramps delayed by land expropriations. Additionally, repairs were completed on a bridge over the Paranhana River in Taquara to stabilize the structure following flooding. Other regional developments include the commencement of the Volta Fria Bridge in Mogi das Cruzes, supported by a R$21 million state investment, and the requalification of the Governador José Wilson Siqueira Campos Bridge near Palmas and Luzimangues, which has reached 87.49% completion. A new bidding process for solar-powered lighting on that bridge is set for October 16. This system will utilize photovoltaic panels and integrated batteries to reduce vulnerability to cable theft and vandalism.
