Baleària electric ferry project between Spain and Morocco

Overview

Spanish shipping company Baleària is developing a green maritime corridor between Tarifa, Spain, and Tangier, Morocco, through an investment exceeding 200 million euros. The project involves the construction of two 87-meter electric catamarans at the Armon shipyards in Gijón.

As of October 2026, the first vessel has been successfully floated. The ship features a 14 MWh battery storage system designed to enable zero-emission navigation. The initiative also includes the electrification of port infrastructure in both Tarifa and Tangier to support battery charging. The first vessel is expected to enter service in the summer of 2027, with a second identical catamaran scheduled to join the fleet by the end of that year.

In late October 2026, the first 100% electric fast ferry was officially launched at the Armón Shipyards. The project, which aims to establish the first green maritime corridor between Europe and Africa, is supported by the Strategic Project for the Recovery and Transformation of the Economy (PERTE) for the Naval Industry. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently visited the Armón facilities to observe construction progress.
