Overview

Energy security and resource management have become significant points of political contention in the Balkans.

In Albania, allegations of political interference have emerged regarding energy infrastructure. Journalist Artan Hoxha accused former Energy Minister Belinda Balluku of using police forces to obstruct Delvina Gas, a company that had reportedly made substantial investments in gas processing infrastructure.

In North Macedonia, the energy sector is marked by internal political disputes. The VMRO-DPMNE party has accused the SDSM of mismanaging state energy assets and failing to invest in new capacities, pointing to audit reports of losses at the state-owned ESM.
