The Balkan region is observing various anniversaries and milestones related to the conflicts and human rights issues of the late 20th century. Commemorations include the 35th anniversary of Radovan Karadžić’s 1991 warnings to the Bosniak people, in which he threatened a “highway of hell and suffering” and suggested the group might face “extinction.” These statements are regarded as precursors to the genocide that occurred during the pursuit of Bosnian sovereignty. In response to these threats, Alija Izetbegović, the first President of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, noted that such rhetoric explained why the country sought independence from Yugoslavia. Additionally, the region is marking the death of Ratko Mladić, the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska who was serving a life sentence for genocide and crimes against humanity. Other observances include the 29th anniversary of the 1997 murder of Dušan Jovanović, a Roma boy killed by neo-Nazis, which serves as a symbol of anti-Roma racism in Serbia. The Romani Cultural Center of Serbia has proposed October 18 as a day of collective remembrance for the Roma community. Political tensions have resurfaced as Milorad Dodik, leader of the ruling party in Republika Srpska, praised convicted war criminals Radovan Karadžić, Momčilo Krajišnik, and Ratko Mladić, calling them “giants of our national and historical struggle” and claiming they were “unjustly imprisoned.” Dodik further asserted that Republika Srpska is “certainly not genocidal” and expressed opposition to reaching agreements with Bosniaks.
