Balkan singers share personal and career histories

Various Balkan singers have shared personal details regarding their career origins, family histories, and private struggles.

Pop singers Danijela Martinović and Anica Milenković have discussed family support and personal challenges. During an emotional concert in her childhood hometown, Martinović reflected on her father Ivan’s guidance when she began music at age 14, noting his advice to ‘just do not embarrass me’ served as a lifelong principle. Milenković addressed social media negativity following her return from the United States, stating her profile is for sharing work and that there is ‘no place for hate or negative energy.’ She also shared that she reached 115 kg during a period of high stress following her son’s surgery.

Folk singers Ljuba Aličić and Sloba Radanović have detailed their paths from modest backgrounds to success. Aličić, who began singing at age 12, rose to prominence with hits like ‘Svirajte mi za Željanu’; despite his current luxury lifestyle, he left school in the fifth grade and has been married to Željana for 37 years. Radanović, who gained popularity after appearing on ‘Zadruga’, previously worked in construction, coal and cement unloading, fruit picking, and security.
