Serbia and Balkans face widespread forest and landfill fires

A series of large forest and landfill fires are burning across the Balkans. In Serbia, a blaze near Leskovac has spread to Razgojna, Grdanica and Donja Lokošnica, prompting an urgent public warning. Fires near Kraljevo have consumed about 80 hectares of forest and 70 hectares of grass, while fires around Knjaževac and Zaječar have burned roughly 150 hectares of forest near Ušće. The Deliblatska peščara reserve is on fire, with about 500 hectares of forest affected. Landfill fires have erupted at Bačka Palanka, where a state of emergency was declared, and at the Srem‑Mačva site near Jarak, producing thick smoke over Sremska Mitrovica. The European Forest Fire Information System has forecast an extremely high fire‑risk level for the Balkans over the next week. In Bosnia‑Herzegovina’s Herzegovina‑Neretva Canton, numerous open‑air and landfill fires were recorded, the highest number of interventions occurring around Čapljina. Similar incidents are reported in Macedonia, Slovenia, Croatia and Slovakia, reflecting a regional surge in fire activity driven by hot, dry, windy conditions.
