In late July 2026, courts in the Balkans delivered a series of verdicts against local officials accused of corruption. The Basic Court in Pristina sentenced former Kosovo mayor Shpend Ahmeti to two years in prison and a fine for failing to declare assets. Within days, Albanian authorities heard testimony from Vaut i Dejës mayor Kristjan Shkreli on vote‑buying charges, and a North Macedonian court upheld convictions of six officials from the Divjakë municipality for tender violations involving about €1 million. On 30 July, the Kosovo Special Prosecutor’s Office filed an indictment naming six suspects (initials A.H., D.R., D.M., F.Q., Sh.K. and R.B.) for participation in an organised‑crime group that had planned a serious murder and armed attacks on businesses between December 2024 and February 2025. The charges include preparation of murder, illegal possession of firearms and explosives, document falsification and narcotics possession. Prosecutors said the plot was thwarted through investigative work and the case was referred to the Basic Court in Pristina. The indictment, filed on 30 July, formally charges the six individuals with murder‑related conspiracy, illegal weapons and explosives possession, and narcotics offenses, and prosecutors have asked the court to impose additional measures against any convicted parties. The opposition movement Vetëvendosje also filed a criminal complaint with Kosovo’s Special Prosecutor’s Office on 30 July, alleging illegal legalisations tied to construction firms and large sums of money by Pristina mayor Perparim Rama and senior cabinet members. Rama welcomed the investigation and called on Prime Minister Albin Kurti to answer the prosecutor’s summons. These developments illustrate a coordinated, region‑wide push to hold municipal leaders accountable for corruption while simultaneously targeting organised crime across Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia.
