Ballon d’Alsace mountain tourism adaptation

Overview

The Ballon d’Alsace ski resort has initiated efforts to address the challenges of climate change and the evolving mountain tourism landscape through strategic partnerships and operational shifts.

Initially, the resort established a partnership with La Rosière Domaine Outdoor under a sponsorship program led by the Domaines Skiables de France (DSF) Solidarity Commission. This collaboration focuses on exchanging expertise regarding the diversification of activities and the development of new economic models. The agreement includes a reciprocity benefit for seasonal pass holders between the two domains.

Subsequently, the Syndicat mixte interdépartemental du Ballon d’Alsace (SMIBA) announced specific operational adjustments for the upcoming winter season, including modified access schedules and the closure of the Tourtet ski lift to concentrate resources. Long-term, SMIBA is pursuing a transition toward an “all-season” destination. This strategy involves developing activities for diverse audiences, such as hikers and families, to maintain regional attractiveness. Consultations with approximately sixty local stakeholders have been ongoing since November 2025 to address environmental and economic constraints.
