Ballon d’Or of All Time fan vote

Overview

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or, France Football launched the ‘Ballon d’Or Of All Time’ (B.O.A.T.) award. This initiative allows fans to vote for the greatest individual campaign in the trophy’s history from a list of ten legendary players who have won the award at least twice.

Nominees include Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo Nazário, Marco van Basten, Michel Platini, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Kevin Keegan, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff, and Alfredo Di Stéfano. Pelé and Diego Maradona are ineligible as they never won the original award.

As of October 23, 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 season with Manchester United has increased its lead, holding approximately 75% of the votes. Lionel Messi follows in the rankings, though his support remains split across multiple winning years. Analysts suggest this gap exists because the voting structure evaluates specific winning years rather than entire careers.

To resolve confusion among participants, France Football issued a clarification stating that the online poll is a “symbolic public consultation” intended to celebrate the anniversary. The initiative does not result in an official trophy or formal recognition during the actual Ballon d’Or ceremony.

The voting process is conducted via the official website, with each vote costing one euro. Participants are entered into a draw for two tickets to the 2027 Ballon d’Or ceremony. The voting period is scheduled to conclude on October 27, with results expected to be announced on October 28.
