The banana sector in Magdalena, Colombia, is facing a compounding crisis involving severe weather and economic instability. Initially, recurring windstorms in the Río Frío district caused significant damage to crops and small-scale producers. These weather events, which included gusts exceeding 30 kilometers per hour, previously affected between 1,000 and 1,500 hectares, prompting the Administrative Tribunal of Magdalena to order local authorities to implement assistance measures for cooperatives.

The situation has since escalated into a dual crisis as producers face unfavorable exchange rates alongside the ongoing weather damage. The Asociación de Bananeros del Magdalena y La Guajira (ASBAMA) reported to the Ministry of Agriculture that a strengthening peso is pushing export operations below the break-even point. ASBAMA noted that profitability is threatened when the Representative Market Rate falls below approximately $3,533 COP, whereas recent rates reached $3,099.

Because operational costs like labor and supplies are paid in pesos, the industry is unable to offset the loss in dollar-denominated income. Combined with four recent windstorms affecting over 1,000 hectares in areas such as Guacamayal, Orihueca, and Río Frío, the association is calling for national government intervention to protect regional jobs and sector continuity.
