131st Bandera de La Concha qualifying regatta

The qualifying regatta for the Bandera de La Concha in Donostia began with 24 boats competing for seven spots in the main event. Early reports noted local teams like Donostia had already secured qualification, while Oriola was considered a major favorite. Following the conclusion of the women's qualifying regatta, seven crews secured spots for the final competition: San Juan, Astillero, Tolosaldea, Orio, Hibaika, Donostiarra, and Zarautz. San Juan recorded the best times. Notably, no teams from Biscay qualified for the second consecutive year, as the four Biscayan traineras failed to secure a position. During the first day of the 131st Bandera de La Concha competition, Orio established a narrow three-second lead over Donostiarra. While the San Sebastián-based Donostiarra crew performed strongly, Orio maintained its advantage through a competitive final stretch. Other rankings from the opening day included Bermeo in fourth place, 21 seconds behind the leader, and Hondarribia in fifth, 32 seconds behind. Zierbena finished 11 seconds behind Orio; the crew attributed their loss of time during the return leg to increasing wind intensity and difficult sea conditions. Coxswain Aitor Lazkano noted that the crew attempted to seek shelter near the island to mitigate the wind's impact. The competition is scheduled to conclude next Sunday.
