Bangka Belitung wildfire disaster
Overview
Massive forest and land fires in Indonesia’s Bangka Belitung province have caused significant destruction to residential areas, particularly in Dusun Serdang, South Bangka Regency. Initial reports indicated that between 500 and 600 houses were destroyed, affecting approximately 2,000 to 2,400 people. Governor Hidayat Arsani described the event as a “major disaster for the region.”
Subsequent reports clarified that approximately 300 homes were destroyed and at least 1,800 people were affected, with many residents seeking shelter in mosques and schools. The fires were fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, spreading rapidly through residential areas built on former peatland.
Officials attributed the intensity of the blazes to the El Niño weather phenomenon and slash-and-burn land clearance practices. In addition to the local destruction, the fires have generated severe haze, leading to air pollution spikes and respiratory illnesses in neighboring Singapore and Malaysia.
