Bangkok flood management and water retention efforts

Overview

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has begun expanding water management infrastructure by adding seven new ‘monkey cheek’ water retention areas. This initiative seeks to increase the city’s total storage capacity to over 14 million cubic meters. To manage recent rainfall, the BMA has deployed ‘turbo pipes’ and pumps to accelerate drainage in heavily affected areas and is reinforcing flood barriers to prevent water from entering residential communities.

Following these local efforts, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul expressed support for expanding these ‘monkey cheek’ retention areas around the capital. The government has instructed the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning to investigate feasibility, while the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) will study ways to expand storage. The objective is to create infrastructure that manages excess water during floods and provides storage for use during the dry season.
