A 28-year-old man, identified as a CEO, was sentenced to 15 days in prison, suspended for one year, after riding a jet ski through flooded streets on Phetchaburi Road in Bangkok. The incident, which was filmed and shared on social media under the title ‘B K K D R I F T’, drew public outrage as the high-speed driving created waves that struck nearby homes during a period of heavy rainfall. The driver claimed his actions were intended to ‘make people smile’ and to relieve stress, citing a lack of familiarity with local customs due to time spent studying abroad. During police interrogation, he also stated he was encouraged by a foreign friend to perform the stunt to boost public morale. Makkasan police arrested both the driver and the person filming, charging them with obstructing traffic and disturbing public order. Authorities have requested the permanent seizure of the jet ski. Following the incident, academic Wanwichit Boonprong criticized the driver’s justifications. Boonprong argued that living abroad should ideally encourage greater social etiquette and noted that in other countries, citizens typically respond to flooding with community assistance rather than disruptive behavior. The incident occurred amidst severe flooding in Bangkok, where heavy rainfall forced some residents to use improvised Styrofoam rafts for movement.
