Bangladesh fisherman eel injury

Entities: Bangladesh · live eel · 55‑year‑old fisherman · International Journal of Surgery Case Reports · Bangladeshi fisherman

Overview

In late July 2026, a 55‑year‑old fisherman in Bangladesh experienced a live snake eel entering his clothing and lodging in his rectum while fishing. The eel penetrated the sigmoid colon, creating a roughly 5 cm perforation and causing peritonitis. Delayed medical attention led to severe abdominal pain and the discovery of free intra‑abdominal air on X‑ray.

Emergency laparotomy was performed, the still‑alive eel was extracted, the bowel injury repaired and a temporary colostomy placed. The patient recovered and was discharged after four days. Both July 24 and July 27 reports documented the same case, noting its rarity and subsequent publication in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports.
