Bank branch closures in Italian regions

Overview

Reports indicate a significant decline in physical banking services across several Italian regions. In Tuscany, data from the Regional Institute for Economic Programming (IRPET) shows that bank branches decreased by 38% between 2015 and 2025, falling from 2,265 to 1,410. This contraction has left 31 municipalities without any branches, while 58 others are considered at high risk. Experts attribute this trend to digitalization and corporate cost-cutting, noting that digital tools may not meet the needs of populations with low digital literacy.

In the Marche region, the decline has been even more pronounced. Data processed by Fisac Cgil Marche shows a 44.2% decrease in traditional and cooperative credit branches since 2016, dropping from 1,046 to 584. This rate exceeds the national average loss of 35.2%. Currently, 84 municipalities in Marche, or 37.3% of the total, operate without any bank branches.

New data from Istat highlights a compounding crisis in Marche, where a shrinking and aging population is intersecting with the loss of services. The regional population fell below 1.5 million in 2024, and the ratio of residents over 65 to those under 15 is higher than the national average. Economic indicators show the region’s GDP per capita remains eight percentage points below the national average. In the province of Pesaro and Urbino, 14 municipalities are now without staffed bank branches, creating difficulties for local businesses and elderly residents.
