Bank of Maldives institutional developments
Overview
The Bank of Maldives (BML) has achieved international recognition and expanded its local entrepreneurship initiatives. The institution was included in the inaugural Forbes World’s Top Performing Banks 2026 list, specifically placed in Tier 6 for banks with assets between USD 3 billion and USD 10 billion. CEO Mohamed Shareef noted that the ranking confirms the bank is “well-capitalized and resilient.”
In addition to its global ranking, the bank has focused on supporting local businesses. Following the successful completion of ‘The Island Factory’ project—a tuna jerky producer supported by a previous startup grant—BML launched its 2026 Startup Grant programme. This initiative offers MVR 1 million in non-repayable funding, split between two winners, alongside one year of mentorship to assist new Maldivian entrepreneurs.
