Banking sector workforce reductions

Overview

Major financial institutions are implementing significant job cuts to reduce operating costs and integrate new technologies. National Australia Bank (NAB) announced plans to reduce its workforce by up to 2,500 roles—approximately 6% of its staff—over the 2027 financial year. CEO Andrew Irvine noted the restructuring aims to address challenging economic conditions and technological shifts, stating the changes would have no “material impact to customer-facing roles”. The bank expects to eliminate up to 1,500 positions by the end of 2026. In a similar move, Barclays is executing a plan to reduce its global workforce by approximately 5,000 employees, or about 5 per cent, by 2026. The bank cited the increased use of artificial intelligence to automate tasks as a primary driver. Approximately 60% of these redundancies will affect support roles, including programmers. As of October 2026, Barclays reported that 1,000 positions had already been cut during the first half of the year, with the remaining 4,000 expected to be eliminated by year-end. Despite these cuts, the bank reported a 12% increase in third-quarter pre-tax profit to £2.3 billion. CEO C.S. Venkatakrishnan described AI as “the icing on the cake, not the cake,” noting the cuts are part of a technological overhaul expected to deliver more than £1.1 billion in gross efficiency savings by 2027. This trend extends to other major lenders. Standard Chartered plans to reduce over 7,000 roles by 2030, and Visa recently announced a 7% global workforce reduction. In Australia, ANZ Bank has cut 4,500 staff, and CBA is expected to lose around 1,000 roles this year. American Express has also announced plans to reduce its global workforce by approximately 5%, affecting between 3,500 and 3,900 employees. CFO Christophe Le Caillec stated the company aims to streamline management layers and improve process control before automating tasks.
