Following a period of significant weather events and Sirocco winds, Bari has initiated several environmental and infrastructure recovery efforts. In the San Girolamo district, the ‘Retake al Waterfront’ initiative involved volunteers collecting over 142 kg of waste, including glass, plastic, and cigarette butts. To combat coastal erosion that has stripped the shoreline by dozens of meters, local authorities and the region have planned beach replenishment. While large-scale sand deposit studies are ongoing, material deposition is scheduled to begin in November and continue through April. Simultaneously, the municipality has addressed urban infrastructure damage. A formal warning was issued to Acquedotto Pugliese (AQP) after a sewage pipe failure and network overload caused a road collapse on Strada della Marina in the San Giorgio district. Preliminary assessments indicate the collapse occurred during a violent storm, where hydraulic pressure forced the road surface to burst. Investigations noted potential issues with the alignment between sewage manholes and the road surface, which may have allowed water to infiltrate between old and new layers of asphalt. This occurred despite recent extraordinary maintenance by AQP to upgrade water and sewage infrastructure. Additionally, residents have reported substandard roadwork quality in via Giuseppe Zanardelli, leading to calls for stricter oversight of construction projects.
