Basque Country security and police union tensions
Overview
Security investment in the Basque Country is projected to reach new highs by 2027, with funding for the Ertzaintza rising by 8.3% between 2025 and 2026. Despite these budgetary increases, the Ertzaintza Professional Union (SiPE) has criticized the Department of Security for failing to protect officers.
Following an incident in Basauri where an officer was targeted via graffiti, SiPE demanded the government “defend the principle of authority,” dismissing institutional statements of solidarity as “hollow words.”
Tensions escalated following violent disturbances in Bilbao involving fires and attacks on police, as well as an eviction operation in Vitoria that left 19 officers injured. In response to these events, the union has demanded the dismissal of Basque Security Minister Bingen Zupiria. SiPE has raised allegations regarding operational decisions, including claims that reinforcements were sent home prematurely and that instructions were issued to avoid intervening during active incidents.
