Bata closes its last European manufacturing plant

Overview

The Bata footwear company, which grew from a small family workshop founded in 1894 into a global industrial empire, has historically driven significant growth in the Czech city of Zlin.

Following the announcement that its Dolní Němčí facility was no longer profitable, the company has officially closed the plant after 56 years of operation. The facility, which had been part of the Bata group since 1992, was the brand’s last remaining manufacturing plant in Central Europe. In its final year of operation, the factory produced approximately 150,000 pairs of footwear for the brand’s stores.

The closure affects 92 employees. Andrea Montagnoli, a member of the Bata board, stated that the decision was “difficult but necessary because the large-scale production structure no longer meets current market demands.” Montagnoli further noted that while a different production model might restore profitability, the necessary investment would not be efficient considering current production volumes and purchasing price outlooks.
