On the night of August 5–6, 2026, a passenger named Jamsheer Athanikkal attempted to force open the emergency exit door on Batik Air flight OD231 while traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi. The incident, which occurred at a cruising altitude of approximately 30,000 to 35,000 feet, resulted in damage to the emergency exit's window panel. The passenger was restrained by cabin crew and other passengers using cable ties, preventing the door from opening. Initial reports indicated that the aircraft landed safely at Kochi International Airport, where the suspect was taken into custody by the Central Industrial Security Force and handed over to local police. He faced multiple charges related to criminal intimidation and violating aviation safety directives. Subsequently, police in Kochi upgraded the charges against Athanikkal to include attempted murder, citing the nature of his actions during the flight. Reports also noted that the aircraft returned to Malaysia following the incident. As of August 8, 11, investigators have identified Athanikkal as a 36-year-old Indian national.
